NM PTI Learning Opportunities

We offer a variety of workshops designed for families, educators and other professionals in English or Spanish for communities across New Mexico. Volunteers in our Leadership Action Network (FLAN) expand their skills through key workshops identified in the Leadership Path for each project.

  • PROspective 101 - (90 minutes) Learn about Parents Reaching Out, the resources we offer and tools for effective advocacy.
  • Family Leadership in Education, Culture and Healthcare Access (FLECHA) – FLECHA is a four part series that provides resources to families on how to get the basic things the need to raise healthy children who are ready to learn. The curriculum encourages families to become “Learning Advocates” for their own children and others in their community.
  • Let's Begin the Journey - (2 hours) Learn the basics about parents rights and special education procedures. Discover tools for home and school partnerships with tips for communication, record keeping and more.
  • Advocacy and the IEP Process - (6 hours) Build your skills in understanding the IEP process and parental rights under IDEA. Find out how good home and school communication helps IEP teams make child-centered decisions to help children succeed. Interactive sessions help participants explore "The Right Question", problem solving and informed decision-making with parents as full participating members of the IEP team.
  • Practical Inclusive Education - (3 hours) Join other families and educators to learn about ways to improve outcomes for all students. Fill your toolbox with resources and tips for inclusive school practices based on meaningful participation in a full range of learning opportunities.
  • Positive Directions in Student Behavior - (3 hours) Learn about functional behavior assessments and positive behavior improvement plans. Interactive session provide opportunities to understand behavior and find positive strategies to support student success. This workshop provides tools for Student Assistance Teams (SAT) and IEP teams as they focus on meeting the needs of students in a school setting.
  • Pathways to the Future - (3 Hours) Learn about NM Pathways to the Diploma for students with disabilities. Learn about timelines and the importance of transition planning for lifelong success. Workshops are designed for families and educators of students entering middle or high school with interactive sessions to explore student options and post secondary goals.
  • Catch the Vision: Student Led IEPs - (2 hours) Learn about self-advocacy to create opportunities beyond high school. This interactive transition workshop is designed for students, families and others in their life.
  • Tools for Student Success - (3 hours) Learn about Response to Intervention (RTI), the role of Student Assistance Teams (SAT), Section 504 plans and more. Families, educators and others work as partners to find practical and positive ways to meet the needs of students before they fail.
  • Skills for Effective Parent Advocacy - (2 hrs) Participants will learn advocacy skills and strategies that they will be able to use in a variety of situations. These skills will improve their ability to achieve desired outcomes for their families in agencies and other systems.
  • Getting and Keeping the First Job - (2 hrs) This workshop is geared toward setting high expectations for all youth with disabilities. Participants will gain tools and knowledge in order to assist youth with disabilities with job searches, obtaining employment, exploring their disability, and articulating the skills that would be used in a work environment.
  • The Journey to Adulthood: What Parents Need to Know (Sexuality) - (2 hrs) This workshop explores how to facilitate discussion of puberty and adolescence with children who have disabilities. The focus is on preparing children for these developmental milestones. We will address ways for families to approach these topics based on their own values and beliefs.
