New Mexico Project DreamCatchers - Early Intervention
Project DreamCatchers has served families of young children since 1993 through a grant from the New Mexico Department of Health Family Infant Toddler Program (FIT). As the lead agency responsible for Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), NM DOH FIT provides statewide early intervention services for infants and toddlers with disabilities, ages birth through age 2 years, and their families. In addition to IDEA Part C services, the New Mexico Family Infant Toddler Program expands services to include families of infants and toddlers ages birth through three who are at risk or have developmental delays, disabilities or have an eligible medical condition.
Family liaisons in Project DreamCatchers work with families of young children and service providers to provide assistance and information about the importance of natural environments that help children thrive. DreamCatchers collaborate with our New Mexico Parent Training and Information Center (NMPTI) staff as families and children transition from IDEA Part C early intervention services to Part B services delivered by the New Mexico Public Education Department.
DreamCatchers provide workshops that help to inform families, service providers and community members about their new journey. We also provide information about the early intervention system, community programs, services and organizations. Through our Parent to Parent Program, we connect families in similar situations who can share experiences, offer practical information and build support networks. These networks are powerful tools when families make informed decisions as their child’s best advocate. We encourage families to share what they have learned to make a difference in their community as a DreamWeaver volunteer in our Family Leadership Action Network (FLAN).
We provide resources and support to families with children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the pediatrics unit at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. We understand the emotions, myths, and realities of parenting a child with special needs.
DreamCatchers does not replace physicians, therapists or other professionals. We believe that many families' needs go beyond the boundaries of formal services. What we can offer each other is uniquely ours. We have all been there.
