Dear Supporter of Parents Reaching Out:

Spring in New Mexico is a mixed bag of fragrant blossoms and allergies, warm sunshine and wicked winds, and flowers along with weeds. At Parents Reaching Out, spring is also a time when we reflect on our work during the past year and plan for the next year, a process which brings its own combination of inspiration and challenges. We have big dreams for the families in New Mexico. We want to help them flourish, not just get by. Our hopes for the families we serve are unbounded, but resources to accomplish these dreams are limited.

Parents Reaching Out has helped families in New Mexico feel supported, empowered, and transformed for 30 years.
Our services are always offered FREE OF CHARGE.

Increasing numbers of parents and professionals are turning to Parents Reaching Out for the help they need. In 2010, we had 21,246 families and 37,909 professionals seek individual help or attend one of the many free trainings we offer. Families find information, guidance, and, perhaps most importantly, emotional support as they navigate the educational or health care systems to improve the lives of their children. Professionals access up-to-date information that will help them involve families in a meaningful way in their child's education or health care needs.

We are dedicated to helping families:

  • Negotiate complex systems, like health care and education.
  • Advocate for their child in specific challenging situations.
  • Build their capacity to help themselves and their communities by providing trainings and workshops.
  • Take an active role in their children's schools.

We are also committed to helping professionals by:

  • Providing support and guidance for schools and school districts who want their students to realize the many benefits of family involvement.
  • Educating policy makers and administrators about the importance of family empowerment, and providing appropriate and comprehensive services for families that support the needs of all New Mexico's children and youth.

For many years, Parents Reaching Out has received the majority of its funding through government grants. However, the budget outlook for our state and federal governments is rapidly changing. We can no longer count on receiving grants at the same levels we did, and we don't anticipate increases to offset inflation. So, we are appealing to you - our strongest supporters.

How will your donation to Parents Reaching Out help us support families in New Mexico?

Here are some examples.

  • $25 - will help purchase materials for our workshops.
  • $50 - will support our Parent to Parent program, which matches families who have similar experiences and needs, enabling them to get both information and support.
  • $150 - allows us to offer materials, outreach, education, and peer mentoring to new parents with a child in the University of New Mexico Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
  • $300 - provides a medical student with the opportunity to participate in the Families as Faculty program and to experience how working in partnership with families will improve systems, services, and outcomes for children with disabilities.

Parents Reaching Out has programs that can help every family improve their child's educational and/or health care services. Our staff understands your concerns because we have direct experience with the systems that you are navigating. Parents Reaching Out needs your help so we can continue to offer our services to families and professionals in New Mexico. The health of families impacts the future of New Mexico. Here is your chance to help impact the future in a meaningful way.

Please donate today.

Sincerely,
